Handwriting expert William Ries began his career as a forensic document examiner with the Philadelphia Police Department Crime Laboratory, Document Unit, in 1975. In 1982 he was appointed to the Philadelphia District Attorney's Office and was responsible for the examination of questioned documents and the supervision of the Technical Services Unit, which included the photography lab and the Graphic Arts Unit.

Mr. Ries retired from the City of Philadelphia in September, 1988 and joined the firm of Forensic Consultants as a staff examiner until his appointment in March, 1990 to the State of Ohio, Bureau of Criminal Investigation Crime Laboratory, as 1 of 3 document examiners for the state of Ohio, Attorney General's Office.
