CURRICULUM VITAE WILLIAM J. RIES FORENSIC DOCUMENT EXAMINER
Graduated Temple University, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, June 1965 - A.S.
Completed a two year, 4000 hour training program in the field of questioned documents at the Philadelphia Police Department Crime Laboratory, Questioned Document Unit, under the direction and tutelage of Cedric J. McKeever, who is now retired from the Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office.
In addition to the training program, Mr. Ries completed the following courses of instruction in the field of questioned documents.
United States Secret Service School, Washington, D.C. - an eighty hour course in questioned document examination - May, 1978.
Pennsylvania State Police Crime Laboratory, Questioned Document Section, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania - a forty hour course in questioned document examination - April, 1978.
Northern Virginia Community College, Annandale, Virginia - a twenty-four hour course in questioned document examination - May, 1978.
Valencia Community College, Governmental Services Program, Orlando, Florida - a twenty-four hour course in questioned document examination - January, 1989.
In addition, Mr. Ries attends various seminars throughout the year in the field of questioned documents as part of a continuing education program.
EXPERIENCE
Mr. Ries began his career as a forensic document examiner with the Philadelphia Police Department Crime Laboratory, Document Unit, in 1975. In 1982 he was appointed to the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office and was responsible for the examination of questioned documents and the supervision of the Technical Services Unit which included the photography lab and the Graphic Arts Unit. Mr. Ries retired from the City of Philadelphia in September, 1988 and joined the firm of Forensic Consultants as a staff examiner until his appointment in March, 1990 to the State of Ohio, Bureau of Criminal Investigation Crime Laboratory, as one of three document examiners for the state of Ohio, Attorney General’s office. Mr. Ries continued as a consultant with Forensic Consultants. In June, 1991, Mr. Ries returned to Forensic Consultants as a staff examiner.

REPORTS/COURT APPEARANCES
Mr. Ries has written over five thousand reports pertaining to the examination of questioned documents. The reports have been prepared for:
Philadelphia Police Department Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office Police Departments of the counties surrounding Philadelphia including Bucks, Chester, Montgomery, and Lancaster counties. Federal government agencies including the Department of Justice, the FBI, Naval Intelligence Service, Immigration, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms. Agencies of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania including the Departments of Welfare, the Liquor Control Board, the Disciplinary Board of the Supreme Court, and the Office of the Attorney General. Agencies of the state of Ohio including the Attorney General’s Office, numerous police departments within the state, the Sheriffs Departments, and the Highway Patrol. The Philadelphia Public Defenders Office, the Federal Public Defenders of Philadelphia, Wilmington, Delaware, Camden, New Jersey, and the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s office.
In addition, Mr. Ries has written many reports for law firms and corporate clients in the performance of his duties as a forensic document examiner.
Mr. Ries has testified as an expert witness in the field of questioned documents over four hundred fifty times in courts of record. His appearances and testimony include:
United States Federal Courts Courts of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Ohio, New Jersey, Maryland, Virginia, and New York. American Arbitration Association Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board Pennsylvania Workmen Compensation Hearings. Numerous civil proceedings involving wills, contracts, employment hearings, etc.
